From iron foundry to design hotel

THE HISTORY FROM THE BEGINNINGS UNTIL TODAY

The east Designhotel opened in 2004 on a site steeped in history. Before 1850, the site was occupied by a factory building with foundry furnaces. In 1851, a fire destroyed the factory down to its foundation walls. In 1888, the "St. Pauli Eisenwerke R. Lohse & Co." was built on the remains of the foundation walls.

Only four years later, another fire destroyed part of the factory, but it was rebuilt in the same year. The ironworks became the "Eisengießerei und Maschinenfabrik Schenck & Co." On the first floor of the main hall was the foundry with the furnaces and casting ladles (Today: Yakshi's Bar, Restaurant, Reception).

The coal for firing the furnaces was delivered via the casemates (Today: part of the east Restaurant) on Simon-von-Utrecht Street. The upper floor housed the "mechanical processing" and the model-making workshop with drilling machines, milling machines and lathes. Raw materials were delivered from Clemens-Schultz-Straße and stored in a one-story hall. A total of around 100 workers are said to have worked at "Schenck & Co.". During the Second World War, a large part of the factory building was destroyed by bombs in 1943. Forty years later, "Schenck & Co." was shut down.

The old iron foundry stood empty for several years until the idea of establishing an overall gastronomic concept here came up.
In only 36 months of construction time, the hotel project with gastronomy and conference rooms was completed and opened on October 28, 2004.
