On your bikes, ready, go!

Exploring Hamburg by bike is one of the best ways to experience the city in all its diversity. Whether along the Alster lake, through charming neighborhoods or out into nature, Hamburg is a wonderful place to explore on two wheels. The city offers not only countless bike paths, but also a constantly growing network of about 300 km of newly built and renovated bike paths. This makes cycling in Hamburg a pleasure for everyone.

Around the Alster

The tour around the Outer Alster is a classic for beginners and experts alike. Start at the Jungfernstieg. From here, the route runs along the water, past sailing boats, cafes and green parks. The route passes through charming neighborhoods such as Winterhude and Alsterdorf and ends at Ohlsdorfer Friedhof, a green oasis that invites you to take a break. If you like, you can take a guided AlsterRadler tour and discover a whole new perspective from the water.

Elberadweg

The Elberadweg ('Elbe Cycle Path') is one of Hamburg's most popular bike routes, combining urban flair, maritime panoramas and green idylls in a unique way. Start in the port district and follow the river west. After just a few kilometers you will experience the typical Elbe landscape with its steep banks, imposing villas and charming captain's houses, which are particularly impressive in Blankenese.

The route takes you past highlights such as the Museum Harbour Övelgönne, the Strandperle and along the magnificent Elbchaussee. Over and over, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Elbe, shipping traffic and green riverbanks. In Blankenese, a detour to the famous Treppenviertel with its narrow alleys and views of the river is well worth the effort.

If you want to extend the tour, you can take the ferry from Teufelsbrück to Finkenwerder and from there cycle to the Altes Land, whose name translates to 'The Old Land', a landscape of orchards, dykes and small villages. There you can enjoy a perfect mix of big city, water and rural tranquility.

Boberger Niederung

The Boberger Niederung in the southeast of Hamburg is a true natural paradise and offers a fascinating backdrop for relaxing bike tours. Here you can experience Hamburg's last shifting sand dune, embedded in a diverse landscape of heathland, moorland, marshes and lakes. After just a few minutes on the bike, you will find yourself in a different world: sandy paths, open meadows and the wide open sky create a real holiday feeling - in the middle of the city.

A detour to the dunes is particularly worthwhile: park your bike and enjoy the special flair of the sandy landscape, which is home to rare plants and animals. If you feel like it, take a break at Lake Boberg - in the summer, the clear water even invites you to swim. The wide paths and varied natural panorama make the Boberger Niederung an ideal destination for those who want to discover Hamburg from its green side.

Whether it's a leisurely ride along the Alster, with a view of the Elbe, or through Hamburg's green oases, you can experience the Hanseatic city in a new way every time you cycle. Get on your bike, discover your favorite route and enjoy Hamburg from a very special perspective.
