Hamburg is a city of water

Whether the Inner or Outer Alster, the Elbe or numerous canals and smaller lakes - water characterizes the city in many ways. If you want to experience the Hanseatic City from a new perspective, there are many ways to get around on the water. Whether by public ferry, pedal boat, canoe or stand-up paddle, the city's most beautiful water experiences await you here.

Public Ferries

Public ferries are not only a convenient means of transportation, but also a relaxing way to explore Hamburg from the water. The Elbe ferries in particular offer stunning views of the harbor, the Landungsbrücken and the famous skyline with St. Michael's Church. If you are looking for a classic harbor tour, you can experience the most important sights from the water with the HVV lines or a barge trip - including exciting insights into Hamburg's history and architecture. The Alster steamboats also invite you to take a leisurely cruise on the Inner and Outer Alster, offering a relaxing break with views of the green banks and magnificent villas.

Pedal Boating

Pedal boating is a classic on the Alster and a wonderful experience for families, friends or couples. Various rental stations around the Inner and Outer Alster, the Stadtparksee or on the canals offer modern pedal boats for relaxing hours on the water. Enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the hustle and bustle on the banks and discover Hamburg's green side from the water. You can also explore Hamburg away from the hustle and bustle on canals such as the Isebekkanal or the Gose-Elbe - don't forget to bring snacks and cool drinks for a picnic on board!

Canoe Tours

If you want to experience Hamburg actively and close to nature, you should rent a canoe or kayak. The Alster and its tributaries, as well as the Gose and Dove Elbe offer idyllic routes through green oases and past charming city villas. Many rental companies offer guided tours to discover Hamburg's waterways and hidden corners. A tip for nature lovers: the route along the Gose-Elbe shows Hamburg from its rural side, with meadows, waterways and surprising peace in the middle of the metropolis.

Stand Up Paddling

Stand-Up Paddling has become a real trend in Hamburg. Whether on the Outer Alster, the canals or lakes such as the Stadtparksee, SUP offers the perfect mix of sport, relaxation and city experience. Several SUP rental companies offer boards and courses for beginners and advanced paddlers. Early morning or sunset tours are popular, when the city is bathed in golden light and the water is especially calm.

Sailing, swimming & more

In addition to the classics, there are many other ways to enjoy the water in Hamburg. Sailing schools and yacht charters offer courses and boats for trips on the Alster or Elbe. If swimming is more your thing, you can cool off at the Alster indoor swimming pool, the Stadtpark Lake or the Elbe bathing beaches. Fishing, windsurfing and dragon boating are also available in Hamburg for a change of pace on the water.
